China’s 60th anniversary celebrations held at Tiananmen square in Beijing

Largest-ever military parade a symbol of country’s huge population and rapidly expanding might.

Tanks and other heavy weaponry rumbled across Beijing behind goose-stepping troops as China celebrated 60 years of communist rule with its biggest-ever military review.
President Hu Jintao, in a Mao jacket instead of a business suit, rode in an open top Red Flag limousine to review the thousands of China's troops.

Celebrations by numeric numbers.
2 – breaks allowed per day for parade participants
18 – weather-manipulation planes deployed to ensure it doesn't rain
20 – foot high portrait of Chairman Mao hung in Tiananmen Square has been freshly painted
50 – 'all-new' Chinese-made weapons, including radars and ballistic missiles, expected to be on display at the military parade
60 – years since Mao Tse-tung stood atop Tiananmen Gate to declare the founding of the People's Republic of China
